Lieutenant General
Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, and VSM, born on February 1, 1956, in Jalal Usman, Amritsar, Punjab, comes from a distinguished military background. His father served in the Indian Army, and his elder brother served in the Indian Air Force. Following their footsteps, Gurmit Singh embarked on a remarkable military career marked by leadership, dedication, and service to the nation.
Education: Gurmit Singh pursued his education, focusing on military studies and strategic affairs. He graduated from the Defense Services Staff Course and the National Defense College, acquiring a deep understanding of military operations and national security issues. Additionally, he holds two M.Phil. degrees from Chennai and Indore universities, further enhancing his expertise in defense matters. Notably, he served as a research fellow for two years at the Institute of Chinese Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he focused on the India-China Boundary issue, demonstrating his commitment to scholarly pursuits alongside his military duties.
Military Career: Gurmit Singh’s military career exemplifies his commitment to excellence and service to the nation. Starting as an Infantry Company Commander, he swiftly rose through the ranks, showcasing leadership and tactical prowess. He distinguished himself as a Brigade Commander and later attained the rank of Major General. Throughout his tenure, he held pivotal roles, such as Additional Director General of Military Operations and Deputy Chief of Army Staff, where he played a crucial role in shaping military strategies and operational plans. His extensive experience in border issues and counter-terrorism operations, including service in Banbasa, Uttarakhand, has been instrumental in safeguarding national security interests.
Achievements and Honors: Gurmit Singh’s exemplary service has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including four Presidential Awards and two commendations by the Chief of Army Staff. He has been conferred with prestigious decorations such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal, underscoring his exceptional leadership, bravery, and meritorious service to the Indian Army.
Current Role: After retiring from the Indian Army on January 31, 2016, Gurmit Singh transitioned to a new service chapter as the 8th Governor of Uttarakhand, assuming office in 2021. In this capacity, he continues to contribute to the welfare and development of the state, leveraging his extensive experience and leadership skills to benefit the people of Uttarakhand.
